There is a reason why the present is described as a gift. It is the only period of time that you have actual control over. It is the time you have now, in this moment, that is yours to do with as you choose.
When we spend too much time thinking, worrying and replaying the past, we begin to become stuck in a lower energy causing feelings of shame, guilt, the shoulda, woulda’s, eventually leading to depression or other states of despair. It’s an energy of time passed - events, actions/inactions, words, thoughts, etc. - that can no longer be changed. Look back at the past as a reminder of where you come from. Admire the fond memories and learn from the others.
While getting stuck in the past can limit us from moving forward, spending too much time in the thoughts of the future can be just as limiting. Planning and creating your future is a powerful and beautiful thing. We all have the power to create what we want and get it if we focus on it and put energy into it. However, there is a line that can be crossed where we can get in our own way causing us to lose what we are working so hard to create. The thoughts of “when I create _____ I will be able to do/feel/be _____” is just as damaging as being stuck in the despair of the past.
It has recently dawned on me that I have been too focused on the future, which has caused fumbles in the energy of creating and receiving what I am working hard to create. While I have put much energy into creating what I want, I have forgotten one major detail getting there… the present.
During my family vacation last week I was reminded (by spirit and guides) the importance of being present. Enjoying the moment in the now is the key element to enjoying and creating life. This eliminates the shoulda, coulda, woulda’s of our future selves looking back to the past that is our present.
The phrase “Be present” is about taking a moment and looking around you. Take in the smells in the air, the sounds that surround you, focus on the conversation at hand, admiring the activity being done, all things happening in the exact moment it happens.
Being present does not mean forgetting the past and to stop planning the future, far from, it is about pulling your energy out of the different time periods and focusing your energy on the now, the one place you can make choices and changes that will show you learned from the past and are creating the future you want. Enjoy the present and realize your past choices brought you here and the choices you make now will bring you to your future.
Take time to enjoy not only the big moments, but the small moments too. Soaking up the time we have with the people we love, taking advantage of the choices we have. Each day on this earth is a blessing and gift we chose before entering it - make the best of it.
