NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2024

Canterbury West Coast
Wood Council

Message from the Board

What an amazing region we live in. Despite all of the negative publicity and economic struggles of the industry I have been really heartened by the outlook of the forestry and processing sector across Canterbury and the Coast.

Discussion with our nurseries indicate the 2025 planting season will be as large as the last three. That will mean a minimum of 14000ha of new land has been converted to forestry within our region in the last five years.

Also our processors continue to invest in new technology and increased spending in the bio energy space. This investment by our members shows the belief that the forestry industry will thrive into the future.

Recently, I met with the 7 other wood council chairs to review the accord we signed 12 months ago. This review reinforced the challenge we all face is social licence. This was summarised as follows;

1. Ensure we are making the best efforts in compliance (health and safety and environmental)
2. Promote this work within our communities
3. Gather a bank of good news stories together for media engagement to encourage a positive relationship

We would like to welcome two new members to our Wood Council. Firstly, Qube Ports NZ Limited (formerly ISOLimited) NZ’s largest export logistics provider. Secondly, Southern Horticultural Products Ltd t/a Intelligro a leading manufacturer of horticulture and landscape materials. Both businesses already have strong relationships with current members but they are keen to learn more about the industry to further their growth and knowledge.

We are looking forward to members joining us for a beer and a yarn at our end of year function coming upon the 28th November.

Mark Grover

Q What made you start in the industry and at what age?
A When I was at school in Ashburton an old family friend owned a tree nursery and I worked there in the school holidays. Even though it was boring work hand weeding long rows of seedlings, it interested me enough to apply to join the NZ Forest Service as a cadet woodsman back at Golden Downs in 1975.

Q What are your greatest achievements in work and life?
A I’ve always focused on creating strong working relationships with staff, contractors, customers and other industry and community stakeholders. I particularly enjoyed my time at either ends of my career with the Forest Service and with Rayonier culminating in various leadership and management roles. My last dual role as Canterbury Regional Manager / General Manager of Operations for Rayonier Matariki Forests was a highlight in my Industry career.

Q What is your role now?
A I’ve been retired now for just over a year but still take a keen interest on what’s happening in the forest and timber processing industry.

How do you see yourself and the business fitting into the local forestry community?
Q I enjoy getting involved in community activities both on the home front and professionally, it’s satisfying to give your time in this space and on the work front to be seen as a good corporate citizen especially where we were able to promote our industry with educational groups in particular.

SML and TrackIT Awards Dinner

By Chris Murphy

The SML and TrackIT awards dinner has now been running for three years. It is held every October as this is the anniversary from when Julie and I took over SML and TrackIT from Mum and Dad. Julie and I thought this was a perfect point in time to recognise long service and those that have shined throughout the year. The long service awards have been running for a few years prior to this as we generally award staff with these once they reach 10, 15, 20 and 25 years.

Listed below are the award categories we recognise and this year's award winners:

Best Eroad performance – Alastair Ward
Consistent loaded weights – Wayne Stewart
Best Kept Rig – Craig Marks
    Good Bugger – Nigel Welsh
Emerging Talent – Steve Terrell (aka Taz)
Best Attendance – Jason Lyon (aka Bert)
TrackIT data accuracy – Nathan Barltrop
TrackIT Health and Safety reporting – Brendan Taylor (aka Boris)

15 Year long service awards went to Rachael Mahan, Adrian Bartle, Graeme Dempsey and Craig Marks

The awards evening gives us a great opportunity to connect with our staff and their partners, share some company statistics and give them an insight to our performance and our vision going forward. As part of this we are now including our customers as they are an integral part of the SML group.

Wood Processors and Manufacturers Survey

Better data to tell the story of Wood Processors and Manufacturers in New Zealand

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is updating a directory of commercial wood processing and manufacturing entities through a short survey.

The aim is to better understand the contribution of the wood processing and manufacturing sector to New Zealand.

MPI has discussed the benefits of the survey with sector representatives and we encourage you to participate.

This short survey is the first step to further engagement to collate sector information and share information.

It should take only 2 to 5 minutes to complete. The survey has straight-forward questions about company details, processing locations and capacity.

If you have any questions, please contact kyle.wills@wsp.com

Port Blakely Essential Oils

Located in the heart of New Zealand's pristine wilderness, Port Blakely has created a product that encapsulates the bright, woodsy notes of Douglas-fir, making it ideal for cosmetics, aromatherapy, and personal fragrances.

Unlike many companies that rely on harmful fossil fuels, Port Blakely has embraced the natural power of trees, creating a fully sustainable, circular energy system. Kaiapoi ITM Sutherland Timber
Junior Woodworking Competition

2024 Winners

Congratulations to all the winners of the Kaiapoi ITM Sutherland Timber Junior Woodworking competition for 2024. It is always fabulous to see the creative talents coming through, even from the youngest of builders.

Each competitor had to construct something using building materials supplied by Sutherland Timber and Kaiapoi ITM. There was such a range of creations from little gardens, games, vehicles, animals, playhouses, furniture and even a TV box with a live show. The kids were super excited to have their finished pieces on display and they really enjoyed the added entertainment.

A great community event for all. Well done to all the organisers.
