Message from the Board | | 2024 has certainly lifted our mood after the industry endured a shocking year in 2023. Mills have reasonable order books and export prices are back to a sustainable level.
Planning for our 2nd Awards Night is well underway and tickets are flying out the door. A caution to everyone to be in quick to secure seats as the venue at Te Pae is limited to 450 and sales are going well.
We have also booked Cam Bagrie for his annual presentation on the 8th May with a venue change to the Commodore Hotel to accommodate the high level of interest this event gets.
Our membership has grown again lately with the addition of 4 new businesses. This gives us the highest wood council membership in the country.
In wider industry news it is pleasing to see the Minister announcing a review of the fees being imposed on ETS participants. Also Dr Rod Carr, as Chair of the Climate Change Commission has recently stated that an over-reliance on radiata may impose a burden on future generations due to the risks of growing a monoculture. In the same presentation he pressed the need for forestry to help meet our net zero 2050 target. The reality is that on the ground we are seeing a substantial reduction in planting intentions with initial forecasts showing that 2024 will only have 50% of the establishment that we achieved in 2023. I recently attended a Climate Change Commission presentation and was amazed to see just how out of touch these people are. Almost all the participants in the room were not looking to establish any new forest on the back of both local and national regulation adding cost and risk to any investment intentions, and this shocked those at the front of the room presenting the content.
Those of us that have spent a lifetime planting, tending and processing radiata pine have seen huge gains achieved in the ability of the humble pine tree and our industry to meet all that has been thrown at us. Concerns around pests and disease will always be a risk when growing a monoculture, however, our isolation and border requirements will hopefully mitigate against these risks.

CWCWC Member Profile | | FOREVER FORESTS
| | We’re a New Zealand grown business with a goal to grow native forests across the motu - doing our bit to help solve climate change.
Forever Forests were born in 2020 by two friends from the forestry industry having a chat about their passion for native forest, a gap they saw in the industry, an overheard conversation questioning how people can make a difference in climate change, and an idea that sparked an endless bound of optimism and energy to get it off the ground.
Realising that achieving environmental good and making it financially sustainable is no easy feat, we had to make it good. But that gap we mentioned earlier? It got the creativity flowing, and we came up with a plan that benefits both landowners, businesses and this planet we call home.
Since then, we’ve grown into a small team of passionate and purpose-driven people doing big things. Our team have over 100 years of experience between them within the forestry industry, have forests of our own, and have a vested interest in some of the reforestation projects we manage.
At the root of it, our vision is to enhance the growth of native forests in New Zealand by giving businesses a platform to offset their carbon and connect them with local landowners running regeneration projects. So with a depth of forestry expertise, a platform to make a change, and connections with the right people we’re working on restoring our land, one tree at a time.
