Message from the Board

Recent events in Hawkes Bay and Tai Rawhiti have done much to damage the reputation of our industry. Our social licence is won at a crawl but lost in a canter. The media have had a huge impact in galvanising public opinion against us. Unfortunately, we are not well represented with cashed up lobby groups like Federated Farmers or Beef and Lamb and we struggle to respond to negative publicity. The 8 Wood Councils must have a real priority to help educate the public on the many benefits of the forest industry. However, to have a strong entity representing us publicly and within the corridors of power would do much to get the positive forest industry message out there. Within Canterbury and the West Coast we are a critical industry and major contributor to rural communities and the regional economy. The sense of community that our Wood Council generates continues to attract new members and we do not see members cancelling their fees and getting out. Any member feedback on how we can do this better is always welcome.

A Work:
- Growing the business from a staff of 5 to 130 today.

A Life:
- Three age group ultra-marathon world records.
- Oldest competitor at the 2011 Commonwealth Ultra Marathon Championships. Fourth place and first Kiwi for team bronze.

Q What is your role now?
A Semi-retired Managing Director

Q How do you see yourself and the business fitting into the local forestry community?
A SRS feel privileged to be part of a uniquely cooperative and supportive group of businesses. I take a much less active role nowadays but the company will continue to participate in industry initiatives.

CWCWC FUNDRAISING EVENT

The Canterbury West Coast Wood Council recently hosted a Fundraising Event in Christchurch. The goal was to raise funds to support communities in the North Island that were affected by Cyclone Gabrielle. Thanks to the generosity of CWCWC members over $10,000 dollars was raised.

CWCWC is pleased to announce that the funds will be donated to families located in the area from Bay View to Seafield Road, Titiokura, and Tutira. After severe flood and silt damage to their homes and schools these communities are still in much need of assistance.

Local spokesperson Dave Wilson from the Bay View Community Charitable Trust says, "We are blown away by the support we have received to date and the offer of $10,000 by those involved in forestry in the South Island is tremendous and will greatly be received".

Upcoming Event with Cameron Bagrie
After last years event was so well attended and member feedback so positive we have decided to get Cameron Bagrie back.

Last year Cameron's theme was the cost of risk so it will be interesting to relook at this 12 months on and with an election imminent.

The Canterbury West Coast Wood Council will be hosting the event at

The George Hotel
50 Park Terrace
Christchurch

This is a free event with limited numbers of 80. Please RSVP to canterburywoodcouncil@gmail.com
